With a heritage dating back to Roman times, lime plaster has served as a foundational building material for centuries. Its widespread use, particularly in solid-walled structures without a cavity, was largely superseded by the introduction of cement-based renders and gypsum plasters during the 20th century. This shift has inadvertently contributed to a significant increase in damp-related issues within older properties.

Traditional buildings were constructed with materials that allowed for natural moisture management. Lime plaster is inherently breathable, facilitating the evaporation of moisture and preventing its accumulation within the wall. In stark contrast, modern plasters like gypsum are non-porous and can trap moisture, leading to deterioration of the fabric of the building and the onset of damp.

Therefore, for any property with a solid, non-cavity wall construction, the use of a breathable plaster such as lime is essential to maintain the health and integrity of the structure.

How can I tell if I have a solid wall with no cavity?

The easiest way to tell is age, was your house built after 1920s? Also, look at the bricks, are your bricks all longways or are they a mix of long and sort, commonly known as headers and stretchers. Measure the thickness of the wall, anything over 260mm will more than likely have a cavity if built from brick.
